Doctrine Man Continues Custom Of Military Services Humor
"Doctrine Man" is an anonymous, unauthorized Facebook comedian strip about living through the absurdities of military services life. Doctrine Man's advice as struck a universal chord throughout the military services, from high-ranking officers down to enlisted personnel. The military has long used laughter to cope with military services doctrine and hardship and Doctrine Man updates are a 21st century extension of that tradition.
Doctrine Man gets it
Doctrine Man was created by an Army officer and made available for the world to see last summer on Facebook. The officer, who prefers to remain anonymous, told the newest York Times that he created Doctrine Man updates to share his disappointment of working for people who "just didn't get it." He leaves names out of the mix, but he takes a hit at military doctrine in a comical way from experiences he has had with anybody he comes in contact with who meet his cartoon criteria. Doctrine Man has lead to numerous private e-mail conversations with other military officers who have wanted to talk with him. His superiors do receive any viable info that is received from his site and use it how they need to.

The stick figures of Doctrine Man comics aren’t what is very important, it is the message he gives. This military superhero is described on the Facebook page as "Able to leap useless acronyms with a single bound, faster than a lumbering field manual, more powerful than a cheese enchilada in a staff huddle." Some of the events that are seen in this comic are things like an officer selecting someone for a special assignment by throwing a book at the first person passing, a military member wearing a Hawaiian shirt in combat, and the military’s endless efforts to make the war zone feel like home.

Doctrine Man is the latest in a long line of satirical portrayals of the common grunt accepting his fate with ironic humor. Bill Mauldin for example made Willie and Joe cartoons during World War II while in Europe. Others include Joseph Heller's "Catch-22" and Richard Hooker's "MASH," novels that were made into major motion pictures. When it comes to comic strips, Doctrine Man could possibly be considered the thinking soldier's "Beetle Bailey," which has been drawn by a number of artists since it began in 1950.
