The Life Of A Pet Painter
A graphic artist feels little faces watching her whenever she works at home. She uses much of her time handling form designs and creating print ads, but finds it stressful and colorless. The faces encouraged her to pursue a different career path. While she was on her way to visit her parents in Texas, she decided to paint pictures of her animals. She tries to find colors that suit the personalities of the animals and then uses them for their portraits.
Her objective in making animal paintings is to capture their essence. Using different colors, I can capture both the animal's looks and its personality. It was the painting of a mixed breed that she and her husband discovered in Mississippi that became her very first. It was a dog which never left the couple, and whose color was red.
This dog was painted green because of its jealousy toward other animals. She is not the first artist to ever paint animals using nonconventional colors. In her paintings, it would be unusual for one not to notice the blue dog. People view these blue paintings as fanciful, but the artist views it as haunting. Many of the paintings are very funny on the surface, but the basis is actually a spiritual one, suggesting, for example, that there is no death but that love and memories perpetuate life, according to the artist's biography on the official blue dog Web site. She wants the art to be a reflection of the animal's essence. Using vibrant colors and unusual patterns, she tries to capture the way they act. All her animals were saved from abandonment. Her newest dog, kept leaving a neighbor's house and wandering to someone else's house and she finally adopted the dog.
She left fliers in local veterinarian offices last summer to market her pet portraits. Clients are requested to provide photos and descriptions of their animals' personalities, she says. She does not pick the colors until she first understands the animal. There is just something that these portraits give that satisfies customers, said the owner.
Her portrait was made using bright yellow to show the energy in her personality. Portraits will be appreciated by people who know the subjects in the pictures, said a gallery owner. To view a portrait is different from showing appreciation for a portrait.
