Advantages And Disadvantages Of Digital Photography

These days, with all of the digital media out there, people often neglect to preserve actual photographs, and in many cases never even have photographs printed. Before digital cameras, physical prints of pictures were one of the only tangible ways to preserve your memories. Whether you had a fancy camera or a simple snapshot camera, or even if you just used a disposable, you still ended up with pictures in hand.

You did not see the pictures as you took them, and often you forgot exactly what shots you took. After a family vacation where you took four or five rolls of film, you would take them into the drugstore and have them developed. If you chose one-hour developing service, you often waited anxiously, checking your black sport watch every five minutes to find out if it was time to pick up the pictures yet.

Looking through the photos was a fun activity and a great way to relive the memories of the vacation. You might come across a funny shot of the elephant at the zoo, or a sill picture of your cousin with the men's sport watch he bought at the gift shop before a mountain hike. Putting the photos in an album was also a fun thing to do.

These days, digital cameras display the photos immediately after they are taken. When you aren't satisfied with a photo, you simply erase it and take another one. While in some ways, this enhances our artistic control, it robs us of the element of surprise. We look through our photos several times each day, instead of waiting until the end of a trip to come across ones that we forgot we had taken.

Along with the surprise has gone the necessity of organizing photos into physical albums. Now, we just upload the pictures to a hard drive or a social networking site and put them in 'albums' there.

There are advantages to this, in that we can easily share photos with people who are not in the same place as we are. But we lose the fun of passing a photo album around the room and looking at the photos together. This is much harder to do around a computer screen.

There are definitely ways that we can combine the advantages of digital photography with the good aspects of print photography. You can have your digital photos printed; you just have to use one of the machines that they have in drugstores with photo developing service. These machines allow you to crop, adjust and print digital photos. If you buy a few scrapbooking tools, you can create a beautiful print album from your digital photos.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How much to charge for my photography services?

So, I have recently decided to put myself out there for photography services for parties/families/pets/children/etc. I have been shooting pictures for over four years now and I have all the equipment and skill to take nice shots. However, I do not want to charge too much and scare people off, especially since I'm new to the business. But, I do not want to rip myself off either, since the editing time takes so long. Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Answer:

I have a friend that is professional and she gives them a CD with 10 pictures in color and B&W (but always give them some extra, I just say 10 in case it ends up being a really horrible photoshoot) and she started at $50 then a couple months later went to $75, then to $100, and so on. Now she charges $200 so, just go with what you feel like you should do. And the price changes depending on if she is shooting one person, or a family. If its a family she will do one close-up of each kid and a couple family pictures.

Hope that helped, good luck with the Business!
